eSIM for Africa

One package across the region, from Morocco to South Africa. Check the covered list once and buy before you fly — a local SIM in most of these countries means a passport, a shop and a queue.

Where it works

33 countries on one package. A few of them:

Included countries
One data allowance for the whole package — use it in any mix of the 33 included countries. It is not per country.
When validity starts
Your package starts when your phone first connects to a network at the destination — not when you install it. Crossing a border does not restart it.
Entering another included country
Your phone picks up a partner network in the new country automatically — keep data roaming on for the onesim line. No settings to change and nothing to reinstall.
Outside the covered countries
The package does not connect. Your phone falls back to Wi-Fi or your home SIM if you allow it — check the list before you go, and look at another onesim package for uncovered stops.
Calls and texts
onesim is data-only. Calls and messages work over data in apps like WhatsApp or FaceTime; your usual SIM keeps your number.
Support and refunds
Message the onesim support team from the app or the website. If a package cannot be installed or used, the refund policy explains what applies. Refund policy

Coverage

Check the country list, not the continent.

Africa is fifty-four countries and this plan covers a specific list of them. The list on this page is the one that counts — worth reading at the planning stage, because overland routes here cross borders that are a long way from anywhere you could buy a local SIM.

Entry rules

Almost every country now wants something filed in advance.

Kenya requires an eTA, Tanzania an e-visa, and most of the others have moved online in the last two years. Apply on the official government site rather than the agency above it in the search results, and check whether a yellow fever certificate is required for your route — it often is when you arrive from a country where it is endemic.

Money

Cards in the cities, cash everywhere that matters.

Lodges, hotels and city restaurants take cards. Markets, park gates, tips, taxis and village guesthouses are cash, and some currencies cannot be obtained outside the country at all. Take out more at a time than feels comfortable; ATM fees are fixed rather than proportional.

Signal

Better in the cities than you expect, absent where you are going.

Urban coverage across the region is often excellent — mobile money means the networks matter more here than in Europe. What is genuinely empty is the space between: the game parks, the desert routes, the mountain passes and the long national roads. Download the whole route before you leave the last city.

Before you go

Three things that decide an African itinerary.

Distance is the first. These countries are much bigger than the map suggests and the roads between them are rarely quick. Most multi-country trips here are flights rather than drives, and the regional airlines are worth pricing before you commit to a route.

Season is the second, and it is regional rather than continental. The Sahara and the Maghreb are pleasant from October to April and punishing in summer; East Africa runs on two rainy seasons that move the game viewing around; South Africa has the seasons of the southern hemisphere, so its summer is the northern winter.

The third is that the good parts have no signal, and that is the point. Book, download and confirm while you are in a city, and treat a camp, a park or a desert night as offline by default.

Open “See covered countries” and search each stop. The list is the authoritative source: if a country is on it, this package works there; if it is not, we point you to another onesim package if one covers it.
