Good to know

What's included, when it starts, and how to get connected.

Included countries
The Italy plan covers Italy only.
Local networks
In Italy your eSIM connects to TIM, WindTre, and Iliad — 4G/5G where the network offers it.
When validity starts
Your package starts when your phone first connects to a network at the destination — not when you install it. Crossing a border does not restart it.
Installation and activation
Install the eSIM while you still have internet — at home or on Wi-Fi. Installation does not start validity. If you already have a onesim eSIM installed, a new package is added to it — no second installation. Setup guide
Calls and texts
onesim is data-only. Calls and messages work over data in apps like WhatsApp or FaceTime; your usual SIM keeps your number.
Support and refunds
Message the onesim support team from the app or the website. If a package cannot be installed or used, the refund policy explains what applies. Refund policy
Travel notes

The practical things a first trip gets wrong.

Tickets

The famous places are timed entries now, and they sell out.

The Colosseum, the Vatican Museums, Galleria Borghese, the Uffizi and the Accademia all sell dated, timed tickets, and in high season they go days or weeks ahead. Buy from the official site rather than the first search result — the resellers charge several times the face value.

Trains

Regional tickets must be validated; high-speed ones must not.

A regional ticket is validated in the green or white machine on the platform before you board, and the fine for forgetting is real. Frecciarossa and Italo tickets are for a named train, seat and time, and need no validation at all.

Driving

The ZTL is the most expensive mistake in Italy.

Almost every historic centre is a limited traffic zone with camera enforcement, and hire cars generate a fine that arrives months later. Park outside the walls and walk in. On motorways, take the ticket at the barrier and pay when you leave.

Eating

Coperto is normal, service is not added, and the bar is cheaper.

A cover charge of €1.50–3 a person is legal and printed on the menu. Tipping beyond rounding up is not expected. A coffee drunk standing at the bar costs about a third of the same coffee brought to a table outside.

When to come

Half of Italy closes in the middle of August.

Around Ferragosto, on 15 August, family-run restaurants and shops shut for two or three weeks and Italians go to the coast. April, May, late September and October are the months to aim for — and 2026 is quieter than 2025, which was a Jubilee year.

Coverage

From the Dolomites to Sicily, on one allowance.

Coverage follows the local networks: strong in cities, along the motorways and on the high-speed lines, and good on the coast and the islands. Mountain valleys in the Alps and the Apennines have the usual gaps, on any operator, so download the route before you drive it.

Italy is on the Europe plan, so the same eSIM and the same data carry into France, Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia and Croatia without a second package. Vatican City and San Marino are on the list too.

Italy questions.

Answers about data, coverage and setup for Italy.

Coverage follows the local networks wherever they reach — cities, transport corridors and most rural areas. Remote mountain and island areas can have weaker signal on any carrier.
