Good to know

What's included, when it starts, and how to get connected.

Included countries
The USA plan covers USA only.
Local networks
In USA your eSIM connects to T-Mobile — 4G/5G where the network offers it.
When validity starts
Your package starts when your phone first connects to a network at the destination — not when you install it. Crossing a border does not restart it.
Installation and activation
Install the eSIM while you still have internet — at home or on Wi-Fi. Installation does not start validity. If you already have a onesim eSIM installed, a new package is added to it — no second installation. Setup guide
Calls and texts
onesim is data-only. Calls and messages work over data in apps like WhatsApp or FaceTime; your usual SIM keeps your number.
Support and refunds
Message the onesim support team from the app or the website. If a package cannot be installed or used, the refund policy explains what applies. Refund policy
Arrival guide

Your first hour in the United States.

Immigration takes longer here than almost anywhere else, and nothing about the airport assumes you have a working phone. Both are easier to plan around than to improvise.

  1. 1

    Before you leave home

If you travel under the Visa Waiver Program, apply for ESTA on the official government site at least 72 hours before departure — the fee has changed recently, so check the current amount, and ignore the agencies that charge several times more. Install your onesim eSIM over Wi-Fi and leave the line switched off.

  2. 2

    Immigration and customs

Allow 45 to 90 minutes at the large gateways at peak times. Most visitors are photographed and fingerprinted. Have your address for the first night written down — you will be asked for it, and "a hotel" is not an answer.

  3. 3

    Turn on your data

Open Settings → Mobile Data, select the onesim line for mobile data, and turn data roaming on for that line only. Keep your home SIM in the phone with its data roaming off, so your own number still receives calls and texts.

  4. 4

    Into the city

Almost every major airport has a rail or bus link that costs a fraction of the taxi. JFK has the AirTrain to the subway and the LIRR; O’Hare and Midway are on the Chicago "L"; SFO and Boston are on the metro. Rideshare pick-up is usually on a different level from the taxi rank, and signed separately.

Money

The price on the label is not the price you pay.

Sales tax is added at the register and varies by state and city — from nothing in Oregon and Delaware to nearly 10% in parts of California and New York. Tipping is 18–20% in a sit-down restaurant, a dollar or two a drink at a bar, and 15–20% for a taxi. A $22 plate and a $14 cocktail is a $45 dinner.

Distances

The map lies about how big it is.

Los Angeles to San Francisco is a six-hour drive. New York to Miami is nineteen. Domestic flights are usually cheaper than the equivalent European train, and Amtrak is scenic rather than fast outside the north-east corridor.

Phone

A travel eSIM gives you data, not a US number.

That covers maps, rideshares, restaurant waitlists and everything else a visitor actually needs. What it does not do is receive an American SMS — so if a service insists on texting a US number, keep your own line reachable and use an authenticator app where you can.

Coverage

Excellent in cities, patchy in the parks.

Urban and interstate coverage is strong. National parks are a different country: Yellowstone, Big Bend and much of Utah have long stretches with no signal on any network. Download offline maps for a park before you drive into it.

USA questions.

Answers about data, coverage and setup for USA.

Coverage follows the local networks wherever they reach — cities, transport corridors and most rural areas. Remote mountain and island areas can have weaker signal on any carrier.
