eSIM for Australia

Data for Sydney, Melbourne, the east coast and the outback drive between them, installed before the long flight. Australia is on the Oceania plan with New Zealand, so a trip that does both stays on one eSIM.

Good to know

What's included, when it starts, and how to get connected.

Included countries
The Australia plan covers Australia only.
Local networks
In Australia your eSIM connects to Optus — 4G/5G where the network offers it.
When validity starts
Your package starts when your phone first connects to a network at the destination — not when you install it. Crossing a border does not restart it.
Installation and activation
Install the eSIM while you still have internet — at home or on Wi-Fi. Installation does not start validity. If you already have a onesim eSIM installed, a new package is added to it — no second installation. Setup guide
Calls and texts
onesim is data-only. Calls and messages work over data in apps like WhatsApp or FaceTime; your usual SIM keeps your number.
Support and refunds
Message the onesim support team from the app or the website. If a package cannot be installed or used, the refund policy explains what applies. Refund policy

What surprises visitors most.

The Sydney Opera House and the harbour
Distances

The map lies about how big it is, more than anywhere.

Sydney to Melbourne is nine hours by road; Sydney to Cairns is a three-hour flight; Perth is closer to Singapore than to Sydney. Domestic flights are the trains here — Qantas, Virgin and Jetstar are frequent and cheap when booked ahead. Plan one region properly rather than the whole country badly.

Getting around

Tap a bank card on the trains, trams and ferries in every big city.

Sydney (Opal), Melbourne (myki) and Brisbane all take contactless bank cards or phone wallets at the gate now, so there is nothing to buy on arrival. Sydney’s ferries are the best-value harbour cruise in the city. Between cities, hire a car for the coast and fly the rest.

Health

The sun is stronger than the temperature suggests.

The UV index in an Australian summer is routinely extreme, and a mild 24°C day burns fair skin in fifteen minutes. Hat, sunscreen and shade between eleven and three are the local rules. Swim between the flags on patrolled beaches — rips are the real danger, not sharks.

When to come

The seasons are reversed, and the north has a wet season.

December to February is summer and the school-holiday crowd; June to August is winter, mild in Sydney and cold in Melbourne. Tropical Queensland and the Northern Territory have a wet season from November to April, when the Great Barrier Reef is stinger season and some outback roads close. Autumn and spring are the easy months almost everywhere.

Money

Cards everywhere, surcharges often, tipping rarely.

Australia is close to cashless; even market stalls take a tap. Card surcharges of one or two per cent are common and shown at the till. Tipping is not expected. Prices include the 10% GST.

Coverage

Strong on the coast, honest about the interior.

Australia is on the Oceania plan, so the same eSIM works in Sydney, on the Great Ocean Road, in Cairns and in Perth without anything to change. Coverage follows the local network: strong in the cities and along the populated coasts, good on the main highways between them, and absent across long stretches of the interior — the Nullarbor, the centre, the far north — where no network reaches on any SIM.

For an outback drive, download offline maps, tell someone the route, and carry water; the phone is a passenger out there, not a safety net. New Zealand is on the same package, so a trip that does both keeps one allowance across the Tasman.

Australia questions.

Answers about data, coverage and setup for Australia.

In the towns and on the main highways, yes; across the long empty stretches between them, no network reaches on any SIM. Treat the phone as a passenger there: download offline maps and your bookings, tell someone the route, carry water, and expect the signal back at the next town. On the coast, in the cities and along the east coast highway, coverage is strong the whole way.
