eSIM for Dominican Republic

Data for Punta Cana, Santo Domingo and Samaná, installed before you fly. The Dominican Republic is on the Americas plan, so the phone works from the palm-thatched airport to the Saona catamaran, and past the resort gate, where the Wi-Fi gives up.

Good to know

What's included, when it starts, and how to get connected.

Included countries
The Dominican Republic plan covers Dominican Republic only.
Local networks
In Dominican Republic your eSIM connects to Claro — 4G/5G where the network offers it.
When validity starts
Your package starts when your phone first connects to a network at the destination — not when you install it. Crossing a border does not restart it.
Installation and activation
Install the eSIM while you still have internet — at home or on Wi-Fi. Installation does not start validity. If you already have a onesim eSIM installed, a new package is added to it — no second installation. Setup guide
Calls and texts
onesim is data-only. Calls and messages work over data in apps like WhatsApp or FaceTime; your usual SIM keeps your number.
Support and refunds
Message the onesim support team from the app or the website. If a package cannot be installed or used, the refund policy explains what applies. Refund policy
Arrival guide · Punta Cana

Landing in Punta Cana: the first hour, in order.

Punta Cana International handles most of the country’s air arrivals, under roofs of palm thatch, about 20 km from the resorts of Bávaro. The first hour is easier with the e-Ticket done at home and the phone working before the taxi rank.

  1. 1

    Before you leave home

Install your onesim eSIM over Wi-Fi and leave the line switched off until you land. Then fill in the e-Ticket, the free entry and exit form at eticket.migracion.gob.do: one form covers up to seven people travelling together and produces one QR code, which the airline asks for at check-in. Staying in a rental? Ask the host for the full address, down to the sector.

  2. 2

    Turn on your data

Once the plane is on the ground, open Settings → Mobile Data, choose the onesim line for mobile data and turn data roaming on for that line only; that first connection starts the package. Your home SIM stays in the phone with its own data roaming off, so calls and texts to your usual number still arrive.

  3. 3

    Taxi, Uber or transfer

Authorised taxis wait at arrivals and work to the airport’s published rates, so confirm the fare before you get in. Uber has marked pick-up points for UberX and Uber Select at both terminals, and the app needs nothing but data. Many resort packages already include a transfer: check yours before paying twice, and keep the hotel’s address on screen for the driver.

  4. 4

    Going home

The e-Ticket covers the flight out as well, so keep the departure QR code on your phone; a screenshot works without signal. The US$20 departure tax is already in your fare. Stayed more than 30 days? A fee on a sliding scale applies, paid online before you leave or at the airport’s immigration desk after security.

Travel notes

Life beyond the wristband.

The carved stone facade of the Cathedral of Santo Domingo lit at night
The meme

Do not mention the third strike of 15 March 2026.

The Dominican Republic reached the semi-final of the 2026 World Baseball Classic unbeaten, then lost 2–1 to the United States when a full-count slider to Geraldo Perdomo, below the zone by ESPN’s reading, was called strike three to end the game. Baseball is the national obsession, and the winter league runs from mid-October into January: Santo Domingo’s Estadio Quisqueya is where the argument continues.

Hot take

Punta Cana has the beaches. Santo Domingo has the firsts.

Two and a half hours west by motorway, the Ciudad Colonial is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Americas, with the oldest cathedral, the first paved street, Calle Las Damas, and the oldest European fortress in the New World. Coppola shot the Havana scenes of The Godfather Part II here. A day trip works; a night in the old town works better.

Myth

The ‘man, good’ story about mangú has no paperwork.

The national breakfast is mashed green plantain with pickled red onion, usually with fried salami, cheese and eggs: los tres golpes, the three hits. The favourite story behind the name has a US soldier of the 1916–1924 occupation tasting it and saying ‘man, good’. No document confirms it. The rival theory, a Congolese word for mashed roots, has no dictionary behind it either.

When to come

Whales in winter, seaweed in summer.

Humpback whales gather in Samaná Bay from January to March, and December to early March brings the most comfortable weather. Summer is sargassum season: 2025 was the record year for the brown seaweed across the Caribbean, and 2026 is on course to be at least the second biggest, easing since August. The University of South Florida publishes a monthly outlook worth reading before you book a beach.

Unwritten rules

‘Mi amor’ at the till is manners. The 10% on the bill is not the tip.

Dominicans are warm with strangers: being called mi amor or cariño in a shop is simply how people talk, as the tourism ministry itself points out. Restaurant bills already add a 10% service charge and 18% ITBIS tax; the custom is to leave another 10% for the server, while taxi drivers do not expect a tip. And pack something smart: people dress up to go out.

Dominican Republic questions.

Answers about data, coverage and setup for Dominican Republic.

No. Haiti shares the island of Hispaniola but is not on the Americas plan, so the package works on the Dominican side only, and near the border a phone that latches onto a Haitian network loses data. The question is mostly theoretical: the UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to Haiti and describes the land border as closed. For a second island on the same package, Jamaica, the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos are on the list.
