eSIM for Iceland

Data for Reykjavík, the Ring Road and the black-sand south coast, installed before you fly. Iceland is on the Europe plan, so a stopover here and the rest of a European trip run on one package. Coverage along the coast is good; the weather forecast is a rough draft.

Good to know

What's included, when it starts, and how to get connected.

Included countries
The Iceland plan covers Iceland only.
Local networks
In Iceland your eSIM connects to Síminn and Nova — 4G/5G where the network offers it.
When validity starts
Your package starts when your phone first connects to a network at the destination — not when you install it. Crossing a border does not restart it.
Installation and activation
Install the eSIM while you still have internet — at home or on Wi-Fi. Installation does not start validity. If you already have a onesim eSIM installed, a new package is added to it — no second installation. Setup guide
Calls and texts
onesim is data-only. Calls and messages work over data in apps like WhatsApp or FaceTime; your usual SIM keeps your number.
Support and refunds
Message the onesim support team from the app or the website. If a package cannot be installed or used, the refund policy explains what applies. Refund policy
Route idea · the south coast

Six days from Reykjavík to the icebergs.

Most first trips to Iceland drive the southern half of the Ring Road: waterfalls, black sand and a lagoon full of icebergs, all within a long day of the capital. Six days lets you stop properly at each. The line below is an illustration, not a map.

Coloured roofs of Reykjavík and the bay, seen from Hallgrímskirkja1

Reykjavík · Days 1–2

Keflavík airport is 50 km out, so collect the car there or take the airport coach into town. Ride the lift up Hallgrímskirkja, which took 41 years to build, then spend the evening in a pool hot pot like everyone else. At Bæjarins Beztu, a hot-dog stand since 1937, order ‘eina með öllu’ — one with everything.

Strokkur geyser erupting in the Geysir geothermal area2

The Golden Circle · Day 3

Þingvellir, where Iceland’s parliament first met around 930, lies in a rift valley; one parking fee covers the day. The ads put the Silfra fissure between continents; the park’s own site says it lies between the North American plate and the Hreppar microplate. Then Geysir, which gave English its word, and Strokkur beside it, erupting every six to ten minutes.

The Reynisdrangar sea stacks off the black sand of Reynisfjara3

Vík and the waterfalls · Day 4

Walk behind Seljalandsfoss and get soaked at Skógafoss, both 60 metres high, then drive on to Reynisfjara, the black beach beside Vík. Read the warning light at the entrance: on orange, stay 25 metres from the water; on red, the beach is closed. Sneaker waves come without warning and can sweep an adult out to sea in seconds.

An iceberg in Jökulsárlón with the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier behind4

Jökulsárlón · Days 5–6

On the way east, stay on the path at Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon: a Justin Bieber video brought such crowds that it was closed in 2019 to protect it. Then the glacier lagoon, where icebergs calve off Breiðamerkurjökull, drift out to sea and wash up on the black beach known as Diamond Beach. Two Bond films were shot here.

How the plan fits this route

Iceland is on the Europe plan, so one package covers the whole drive and carries on if the trip continues to mainland Europe. SafeTravel rates coverage along the coast as generally very good, with gaps in canyons and deep valleys. Download the route offline in Reykjavík, and check road.is before every long drive, as SafeTravel advises.

Travel notes

What the hot-pot regulars already know.

The Seljavallalaug outdoor pool and its changing hut in a green valley
Only here

Iceland had no mosquitoes. In October 2025 it found three.

Iceland was, with Antarctica, one of the last places on earth without mosquitoes, until an amateur insect-watcher in Kjós, just north of Reykjavík, caught the first of three on a red-wine ribbon he had put out for moths, on 16 October 2025. In September 2026 a biologist told Vísir they seem to have ‘evaporated’: none turned up all summer. The midges of Mývatn, ‘midge lake’, never left.

House rules

The pools are on UNESCO’s list. The naked shower is not optional.

In December 2025 Iceland’s swimming-pool culture joined UNESCO’s intangible heritage list, the first entry Iceland has nominated on its own. The hot pots are where Icelanders meet, and where the weather is discussed, as Visit Reykjavík puts it, ‘with near-religious dedication’. The rule at the door is strict: a thorough shower with soap and without a swimsuit before you get in. It is why the water needs so little treatment.

Bar trivia

Beer was illegal in Iceland until 1989. Wine and spirits were not.

A 1908 referendum banned all alcohol from 1915. Wine came back in 1921, when Spain threatened to stop buying Icelandic salt cod, and spirits in the 1930s. Beer over 2.25% stayed banned until 1 March 1989, partly because it was seen as Danish. In the meantime bars served bjórlíki, near-beer topped up with spirits. 1 March is still Beer Day.

Driving

The waterfall car parks read your number plate.

At Þingvellir, Seljalandsfoss and other popular stops, cameras read the plate as you drive in, and you pay at a machine on site or online; at Þingvellir one fee covers every car park for the day. Skip it in a hire car and the bill goes to the rental company, which may add a fee of its own. And check road.is before long drives: conditions change fast.

Set-jetting

Christopher Nolan keeps coming back. Matt Damon has notes.

Batman Begins and Interstellar were shot here, and in June 2025 Nolan returned for The Odyssey: Hjörleifshöfði near Vík, the Markarfljót river and Snæfellsnes, in one of the biggest shoots Iceland has hosted. The crew’s running joke, Damon told GQ, was ‘Well, Iceland will be easier’ — ‘and then it’s raining sideways’. Pack for his version of summer.

Iceland questions.

Answers about data, coverage and setup for Iceland.

In Iceland itself, usually not: Iceland is in the European Economic Area, so roam-like-at-home applies within your plan’s fair-use allowance. The package earns its keep for visitors from outside the EU and the EEA — the UK, the US, Canada, Switzerland — whose home tariffs usually charge extra here. On a stopover on the way to mainland Europe, the same package carries on across the rest of the Europe plan.
