eSIM for Malaysia

Data for Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Langkawi and Borneo, installed before you fly. Malaysia is on the Asia plan with Singapore, Thailand, Brunei and Indonesia, so the causeway, the Thai border and the flight to Kota Kinabalu all run on one eSIM. The durian argument does not.

Good to know

What's included, when it starts, and how to get connected.

Included countries
The Malaysia plan covers Malaysia only.
Local networks
In Malaysia your eSIM connects to CelcomDigi — 4G/5G where the network offers it.
When validity starts
Your package starts when your phone first connects to a network at the destination — not when you install it. Crossing a border does not restart it.
Installation and activation
Install the eSIM while you still have internet — at home or on Wi-Fi. Installation does not start validity. If you already have a onesim eSIM installed, a new package is added to it — no second installation. Setup guide
Calls and texts
onesim is data-only. Calls and messages work over data in apps like WhatsApp or FaceTime; your usual SIM keeps your number.
Support and refunds
Message the onesim support team from the app or the website. If a package cannot be installed or used, the refund policy explains what applies. Refund policy
Travel notes

Two coasts, two calendars and one very loud fruit.

Entry

File the arrival card before the airline asks for it.

Since January 2024 most foreign visitors have had to file the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card online in the three days before arrival; citizens of Singapore are exempt, and airlines may ask to see it at check-in. Flying on to Sabah or Sarawak means passport control again, even on a domestic flight from Kuala Lumpur, so keep the passport in your hand luggage.

When to come

Malaysia has two coasts, and they keep different calendars.

The peninsula’s east coast — the Perhentians, Redang, Tioman — gets its heaviest rain from November to January, and June and July are its driest months. Penang and Langkawi in the north-west are driest in January and February. Plan the beaches by coast rather than by country, and in some years expect haze from forest fires in Indonesia between June and October.

Set-jetting

Crazy Rich Asians is set in Singapore. It was shot mostly in Kuala Lumpur.

The Youngs’ grand Singapore estate is Carcosa Seri Negara, a pair of colonial mansions in KL’s Perdana Botanical Gardens, and the island escape was filmed on Langkawi. Seri Negara reopened in December 2025 after a restoration, with a café anyone can walk into; the gallery inside asks visitors to register first. Malaysians rarely miss a chance to mention all this.

Smell test

A Victorian naturalist said durian was worth the voyage. A novelist disagreed.

Writing from Borneo in 1856, Alfred Russel Wallace called it ‘a rich custard highly flavoured with almonds’ and ‘a new sensation worth a voyage to the East’. Anthony Burgess, who taught in Malaya in the 1950s, compared it to ‘sweet raspberry blancmange in the lavatory’. Hotels and trains around the region still ban it. Buy a Musang King at a roadside stall and pick a side.

Hot take

Kuala Lumpur is where you land. Penang is where you eat.

KL has the towers, the malls and the flights out. George Town, on Penang island, has the shophouses — on UNESCO’s list with Melaka since 2008 — the street murals that made Ernest Zacharevic’s name in 2012, and a hawker scene Malaysians drive up the peninsula for. Give KL two days and Penang four, and eat breakfast in George Town at least twice.

Food fight

Malaysia and Singapore both invented chicken rice. Ask either.

Few rivalries are fought with forks. Malaysia and Singapore have argued for decades over who owns chicken rice, chilli crab and nasi lemak, and in 2009 Malaysia’s tourism minister of the day suggested some of those dishes had been ‘hijacked’ by the island next door. The banter lasted weeks. On both sides of the causeway, eating the other side’s food and criticising it are national pastimes.

UNESCO has now heard from both. Singapore put its hawker culture on the intangible heritage list in 2020; Malaysia answered in 2024 with its breakfast culture — nasi lemak, roti canai and teh tarik — so the score stands at one-all. Both countries are on the Asia plan, so one eSIM will take you from a mamak stall in KL to a hawker centre in Singapore to settle it yourself.

Malaysia questions.

Answers about data, coverage and setup for Malaysia.

Yes. Sabah and Sarawak are Malaysia, so the same package works from Kota Kinabalu to Kuching with nothing to change. Coverage is strong in the cities, the towns and along the main roads, and thins in the rainforest interior, along the rivers and high on Kinabalu, as it does on any SIM. Download maps before a park, and keep your passport handy: the flight from Kuala Lumpur goes through immigration.
