eSIM for Malta

Data for Valletta, Sliema, Gozo and Comino, installed before you fly. Malta is on the Europe plan, not the Balkans one, and a single package covers all three islands, the ferries between them and every film set on the way.

Good to know

What's included, when it starts, and how to get connected.

Included countries
The Malta plan covers Malta only.
Local networks
In Malta your eSIM connects to Epic and GO — 4G/5G where the network offers it.
When validity starts
Your package starts when your phone first connects to a network at the destination — not when you install it. Crossing a border does not restart it.
Installation and activation
Install the eSIM while you still have internet — at home or on Wi-Fi. Installation does not start validity. If you already have a onesim eSIM installed, a new package is added to it — no second installation. Setup guide
Calls and texts
onesim is data-only. Calls and messages work over data in apps like WhatsApp or FaceTime; your usual SIM keeps your number.
Support and refunds
Message the onesim support team from the app or the website. If a package cannot be installed or used, the refund policy explains what applies. Refund policy

Set-jetting

Malta was King’s Landing before Dubrovnik was.

Game of Thrones shot its first season’s King’s Landing here — Mdina’s gate, Fort Ricasoli as the Red Keep, Fort Manoel for Ned Stark’s final scene — and the Dothraki wedding at Gozo’s Azure Window, which fell into the sea in March 2017. Season two moved to Dubrovnik. Malta has since played Rome in Gladiator II and, in Nolan’s The Odyssey (2026), the islands long said to be Calypso’s home.

Getting around

No trains, plenty of buses, and the Gozo ferry is paid on the way back.

Malta’s railway closed in 1931, so the bus does the work: a single ticket is €2.50 in summer, €2 in winter and €3 at night, valid for two hours with changes. Residents with a personalised tallinja card ride free, worth sorting early if you are here to work or study. The Gozo Channel ferry from Ċirkewwa takes about 25 minutes, and tickets are only checked in Mġarr, before the return.

Driving

Left-hand traffic and British plugs, in the middle of the Mediterranean.

Malta drives on the left — one of four countries in Europe that do, with the UK, Ireland and Cyprus — and uses the British three-pin plug, so bring an adapter from the continent. The roads are narrow and busy, and parking around Sliema is a competitive sport. August runs at 28–34°C by day with nights that barely cool, so save the walking for mornings and evenings.

Hot take

The Blue Lagoon is a morning, not a day.

On Instagram the Blue Lagoon is empty turquoise water. In August it is excursion boats from Sliema and Bugibba anchored side by side, and every flat rock taken by late morning. Take an early boat from Ċirkewwa or Mġarr, swim before the crowd, and leave when it arrives. The water is around 26°C all afternoon anyway, and the rest of the coast is not short of rock to swim from.

Only here

Count in Arabic, say thanks in Sicilian, say good morning in French.

Maltese is a Semitic language descended from Sicilian Arabic, the only one written in the Latin alphabet and the only Semitic official language of the EU. Count to three and it is Arabic: wieħed, tnejn, tlieta. Thank you, grazzi, is Sicilian; good morning, bonġu, came from the French. Nearly everyone also speaks English, often in the same sentence.

Coverage

The Europe plan covers all three islands. The Balkans plan stops short.

Malta is on the Europe plan and not on the Balkans plan, which matters if the trip starts in Prishtina, Tirana or Skopje: a Balkans package bought for home will not connect here. The Europe plan covers Malta and, on the way back, Albania and North Macedonia, but not Kosovo. For Prishtina, add a Balkans package to the same eSIM; each starts only in a country on its own list.

Gozo and Comino are Malta and use the same networks, so the ferry, the Blue Lagoon and a village festa on Gozo need nothing new. Coverage is strong across all three islands; the odd gap is at the bottom of a cliff path or deep inside old stone walls, as it is for everyone. EU SIMs roam here like at home; SIMs from the Balkans, Türkiye or the UK generally pay extra.

Answers about data, coverage and setup for Malta.

The Europe plan. Malta is on it and not on the Balkans plan, so a Balkans package will not connect here. The Europe plan also covers Albania and North Macedonia for the trip home, but not Kosovo: for Prishtina, add a Balkans package to the same eSIM. Each package starts only when the phone first connects in a country on its own list, and must be started within 30 days of buying it.
