eSIM for New Zealand

Data for Auckland, Rotorua, Queenstown and the long roads of the South Island, installed before you fly. New Zealand is on the Oceania plan with Australia, so one eSIM covers both sides of the Tasman — and unlike a lot of world maps, it does not leave New Zealand out.

Good to know

What's included, when it starts, and how to get connected.

Included countries
The New Zealand plan covers New Zealand only.
Local networks
In New Zealand your eSIM connects to Spark — 4G/5G where the network offers it.
When validity starts
Your package starts when your phone first connects to a network at the destination — not when you install it. Crossing a border does not restart it.
Installation and activation
Install the eSIM while you still have internet — at home or on Wi-Fi. Installation does not start validity. If you already have a onesim eSIM installed, a new package is added to it — no second installation. Setup guide
Calls and texts
onesim is data-only. Calls and messages work over data in apps like WhatsApp or FaceTime; your usual SIM keeps your number.
Support and refunds
Message the onesim support team from the app or the website. If a package cannot be installed or used, the refund policy explains what applies. Refund policy

What a Kiwi will tell you in the first hour.

Hobbit holes and green hillsides reflected in a pond at Hobbiton, Matamata
The meme

New Zealand is used to being left off the map.

Enough world maps forget it that there is a subreddit, r/MapsWithoutNZ, collecting them — IKEA withdrew one in 2019. In 2018 the prime minister and the comedian Rhys Darby starred in a tourism ad about it, #getNZonthemap. The joke undersells the place: New Zealand is bigger than the United Kingdom, with about a thirteenth of the people. Budget the drives accordingly.

Set-jetting

The Shire is a sheep farm near Matamata, and Middle-earth is filming again.

Hobbiton’s 44 hobbit holes sit on the Alexander family’s farm, rebuilt in permanent materials for The Hobbit and open only on guided tours — book as far ahead as you can. In mid-2026 production of The Hunt for Gollum started in New Zealand, with a cinema release set for December 2027. Expect the Tolkien trail to get busier, not quieter.

Myth

The sheep joke is four decades out of date.

In 1982 New Zealand had 70 million sheep, about 22 for every person. By June 2025 the flock was down to 23 million and the population up to 5.3 million — a little over four sheep each, as farms turned to dairy and forestry. There are still more sheep than people, just nowhere near twenty times more.

Before you land

Pay the levy before you fly, and declare the apple when you land.

Most visitors need an NZeTA — from NZ$17 in the official app — plus the NZ$100 International Visitor Levy, paid together; Australian citizens need neither. Then fill in the NZ Traveller Declaration, online or in its app, from 24 hours before the trip, and declare food, used outdoor gear and plant or animal products. Get it wrong and the instant fine starts at NZ$400. The beagles will find the banana.

Small things

Yeah nah means no, and jandals are flip-flops.

Kiwi English runs on understatement. ‘Yeah nah’ is a polite no — the second word wins — and ‘sweet as’ means all good. A dairy is the corner shop, tramping is hiking, and jandals, from ‘Japanese sandals’, were trademarked by an Auckland businessman in 1957. Do not call them thongs. That is the Australian word, and the rivalry is real.

Coverage

Australia is on the same package. Fiji is not.

New Zealand is on the Oceania plan, and the Oceania plan is two countries: New Zealand and Australia. The same eSIM works in Auckland, Rotorua, Wellington and Queenstown, and keeps the same allowance across the Tasman in Sydney or Melbourne. The Pacific islands that often join the itinerary — Fiji, the Cook Islands, Samoa, Tonga, French Polynesia — are not on it, so plan those days around Wi-Fi or a local SIM.

Coverage follows the local network: strong in the towns and on the main highways, and gone exactly where the scenery gets serious. The Milford Road and much of Fiordland have next to nothing on any network, and the alpine passes have long gaps. Download the South Island offline in Christchurch or Queenstown, and book the boat, the campsite and the ferry while the phone still has bars.

New Zealand questions.

Answers about data, coverage and setup for New Zealand.

Australia, yes. New Zealand and Australia are the whole Oceania plan: one package, one allowance, and the phone picks up an Australian partner network when you land in Sydney or Melbourne. The Pacific islands are a different answer. Fiji, the Cook Islands, Samoa, Tonga and French Polynesia are not on the plan, so the package does not work there — plan those days around hotel Wi-Fi or a local SIM.
