Check the country list before you plan the route. A Balkan itinerary crosses borders every day or two, and the list on this page is what the package actually covers — worth reading once, at the planning stage, rather than at a checkpoint.
Know where EU roaming stops. If your home SIM is European, roam-like-at-home covers Greece, Croatia, Bulgaria and Romania and ends at every other border on this list. That is the split to plan around: the package earns its keep in the seven countries where your own SIM does not.
Hire cars and borders need paperwork. Most rental companies require a green card and written permission to take the vehicle across a border, and some exclude specific countries entirely. Ask when you book, not when you collect.
Currencies change over short distances. Kosovo, Montenegro, Croatia, Greece and — since January 2026 — Bulgaria use the euro; Albania has the lek, North Macedonia the denar, Serbia the dinar, Bosnia the convertible mark, Romania the leu and Türkiye the lira. Cards are widely accepted in the cities and cash rules everywhere smaller, and euro notes handed over outside the eurozone always cost you something on the rate.
